Hi, I’m Elaine – your local expert tour guide!
I’m proud to have been born in Plymouth and have lived in this beautiful city for the last 21 years. I am passionate about sharing the extensive history of Plymouth with others in an engaging and fun way.
After completing a degree and a PGCE here in Plymouth, I have loved the past 15 years teaching in primary schools in Plymouth and Tavistock. But…I felt the need to for a change and began to think about other things that I enjoy – the outdoors, history and meeting people.
So here I am, embarking on a new adventure – excited and ready to share my love of this remarkable city and it’s momentous past. I want to bring you more than just the historical facts. I want to share the stories of Plymouth’s past with you, and above all, I want you to enjoy every minute of my tours.
I was born in Ireland in 1954, came to England with family in 1962, and settled in Leamington Spa. I developed a love of history by listening to family stories, reading history books and being encouraged by teachers.
I came to Plymouth in 1977 to train as a social worker and have worked in the care sector ever since. I’ve always had a strong interest in local history. I am currently working at Hamoaze House in Devonport and have been organising and leading historical tours of the house and local area.
I’m keen to share my passion and knowledge of the local area with others and tell the stories of the people of Plymouth’s past.
